December Days: gully cover

December Daily - Day 11 | momentstolivefor.com

Yet another blog. My friends telling me, I’m crazy starting another blog yet again. But I didn’t found another good solution to present my photos of gully covers.

I like gully covers because almost every bigger city has its own with the emblem of the city. Additionally they are round, my favorite geometric shape, and give a very interesting, geometric motif with their surroundings. Therefore I started taking photos of them while traveling.

To give them a place and let them not just sit on my hard drive and collect dust, I started a new tumblr blog called “gullydeckel” (the German word for gully cover). I will post every week one photo. Maybe you like to look at them too, then hop over to my new blog. I think, they are beautiful.

December Days: one thing, ten perspectives

one thing, ten perspectives | December Days | momentstolivefor.com

A few days ago I watched this video about photo assignments and found the assignment so interessting, that I tried it then and there. Ignoring the fact, that I was in the office, actually working. But sometimes a girl just has to do, what she’s got to do, you know?

The assignment: Choose 1 thing and take photos from 10 different perspectives.

Simple, isn’t it? It was fun. You can see the images here. I choose my MacBook and was astonished, how fast I came up with new ideas. It was simply fun and set my inspiration on fire. Try it! I will definitely do it again, and again, and again.

#fromwhereistand: leaves

#fromwhereistand: leaves | momentstolivefor.com

It started as a simple #fromwhereistand photo. Just my feet next to a collection of beautiful colored leaves. On my next walk I took the next two, and another. Soon enough I had a whole pile of photos from this motive. So I made it my goal to shoot it as a kind of challenge everywhere I’ve been this autumn. Love this little Sammelsurium (mingle-mangle) of pictures.

under water magic

under water magic | jelly fish | momentstolivefor.com

I love jellyfish. What is more magical than jellyfish dancing in the water, so soft and light. But sometimes deadly. One of the most deadliest animals on the planet. I still can’t get my head around this fact, that something that beautiful can do so much damage. Out of the water and on the beach it’s mostly looking just like jelly, no magic, no dancing. But under water jellyfish look like fairies of the sea, with their long tentacles dancing. Or the species without tentacles like light pervaded ghosts. Magic.

The photos were taken at the Ozeaneum and Meeresmuseum in Stralsund and at the Zoo Aquarium in Berlin. I’m so happy, I’ve got these shots. They are so filled with beauty and are definitely not everyday photos. I just had to share them with you.

what I’ve learned: a 365 challenge

in a blue mood | one year of cups | momentstolivefor.com

What a journey. One year, one cup a day. Almost. In some months I took only every other day a photo of a cup and never got every day of a month. But I made it to the end of 2013 with every month filled with at least 16 cup photos. I made it through the entire year with this challenge and that makes me so proud.

It’s so fun looking at all these pictures of different cups at different times of day and different places. But I still know exactly, when I took which photo, and that is so exciting. It’s a documentation of my life in cups. I can’t wait to see these pictures printed in a photobook.

All photos were taken with my iPhone 4s and edited with my favorite apps VSCOcam, Afterlight, Lo-Mob, Picfx and Snapseed. Although I have countless more apps on my iPhone, these are the ones I use regularly. I treasure the filters of VSCOcam, Lo-Mob, Picfx and Afterlight. Especially the moody ones with warm light are my favorites (for example F2 on VSCOcam). Snapseed and VSCOcam I used to change the exposure, temperature and contrast and cut the photos. Afterlight is perfect, when you want to downscale your picture before the upload. This way they are much smaller in size, load faster and don’t have the original size, so it’s somehow safe from copycats.

Using my iPhone and not my big camera made it easy to take photos and edit them on the go. I had my camera with me everywhere and everytime, ready to capture the photo of the day. And in the same move post them to Tumblr through their easy app. Because I uploaded some pictures at the same day, I could have used the calendar settings to post them on an earlier date, on the day of the photo. But I found this option too late. But maybe you can lern from this.

If you consider a 365 challenge: just do it. You will lern so much. And even if you struggle because you left out some days, don’t let yourself discourage you. This happens. Everyone has some days, when the motivation is low or there is too much going on and you just forget your project. And this can naturally go on for some days, but after that you will have time again and then just go on with your project, your challenge. Just pretend as nothing has happened and if you did the last project thing a day ago. Don’t let a pause discourage you. It’s such an amazing feeling reaching the end of the year and knowing: I did it! I made it through 365 days. That you didn’t get every day doesn’t matter.

writing and a cup of coffee | one year of cups | momentstolivefor.com

And most important: Don’t overextend yourself. It will do nothing good, if you for example try to craft every day an entire project, if you have to give up after a few days or weeks, because you just don’t have the time. Make little steps like ‘crafting everyday’ a goal, not an entire project. Just a step further, and if it’s just a small one, like folding three corners of an origami star or just one origami figure or preparing the background of a picture. Every step, and if it’s this small, counts as crafting.

Hopefully you are inspired and motivated to make your own 365 challenge. I loved mine and will always be happy, when I’ll look at these photos and think about what I’ve accomplished.

PS: Here you can read, what I’ve wrote in between this challenging year Two photo challenges, one year of cups: the first month and half time at my 365 photo challenge.

round & round #6 in Prague

round & round #6 in Prague - The Prague astronomical clock | momentstolivefor

Such a beautiful city. So much gold everywhere. It’s surely the golden city: Prague, capital of the Czech Republic. We went there on our vacation, after visiting Vienna (Austria) and Munich (Germany). When we walked around the city and finally hit the Old Town Square, we were fascinated by the beautiful architecture and the golden and detailed ornaments everywhere around. No question, this was the perfect place for a round & round photoshoot.

“The Prague astronomical clock is a medieval astronomical clock located in Prague and was first installed in 1410, making it the third-oldest astronomical clock in the world and the oldest one still working.” (via Wikimedia). It’s an amazing clock with many little details to discover, like the figure of the Death on the side of the clock. We stood there over half an hour just looking for those beautiful little things, before we walked away, curious what this wonderful city would show us next.

round & round #5 in Vienna

round & round #5 in Vienna, Austria at the Stephansplatz | momentstolivefor

The Stephansplatz – the place to be in Vienna, Austria. You can visit the cathedral and go upstairs to have an amazing view via Vienna. Or you can ride on horse-drawn carriages around town or eat the famous Sacher torte in one of the coffeehouses. On our vacation we went within three days almost five times there, not always on purpose, but somehow we ended up there eating lunch or crossing it on our way to the tram.

While I waited at the Stephansplatz for my boyfriend on our last day in Vienna, who had a short business meeting, I decided to do the round & round photoshoot there. I found it extremely interessting, how the different styles of architecture stand side by side. Historical buildings like the dome or the old coffeehouse next to modern buildings with a steel front from the 90th or even younger. Nevertheless do I love old magnificent buildings more, with all their little details and figures and it was fun to search for these beauties.

round & round #4 in Munich

round & round #4 - Munich by momentstolivefor

On our vacation I made it a point to take at least one round & round photoshoot at every city. So today I start with my round & round photos from Munich. We visited the Viktualienmarkt in the morning, where we ate a typical Bavarian breakfast with Bavarian veal sausages and pretzels. It was really, really yummy, I can recommend it, although it’s strange at first to eat sausages for breakfast, if you are a cereal person.

After this tasty breakfast we took a walk around the Viktualienmarkt. There were many amazing market stands with flowers, vegetables and fruits, bread, decorations and many more. It was fascinating to see for example 20 different varieties of potatoes or fruits from all around the world. So I decided to do the photoshoot there, because it promised many interesting motives. But see for yourself.
