photo walk: pair

A new experience for me. I do photo walks for quite a while. I started in 2012 inspired by Elise Blaha. In 2014 I attended even a Worldwide Photo Walk in Berlin, but doing a photo walk with a couple of friends was a new experience for me. Since no one of them had ever done a photo walk before, we started with a simple topic ‘rectangle’. Too simple as we learned. So we changed the topic within one street to ‘pair’. And that my friends, was a real challenge for me. It was much harder and a little bit more abstract as my usual topics.

At first, I thought, there wasn’t many pairs around or too hard to find. But then my mind and eyes adjusted to the topic and I found more and more, as always. It always takes a little time to get the mind focus on the topic, but then it clicks and the right motives pop up everywhere. The trouble with the topic ‘pair’ was, that the motives weren’t that distinct. I had to decide each time, if the objects applied in my opinion as pair or not. It wasn’t as easy as red objects or doors, but I liked the challenge and will surely do more of these in the future.

photo walk: rectangle

photo walk: rectangle

Lesson lerned. Don’t choose a theme, that’s too simple. Last week we went on our first group photo walk with six friends. Because no one ever did a photo walk before, I recommended a simple topic like ‘rectangles’. Everyone agreed and started walking. It took us exactly one street to notice, that looking for ‘rectangles’ in a city is simply boring. We changed the topic then and there to something more difficult: ‘pair’.

I don’t say, that rectangles or shapes in general are non of a challenge, but it’s essential to choose the right context, the right environment. In an area, where everything is made up out of rectangles and geometric shapes it’s not much of a challenge. It would have been more challenging, if we did it on a walk through a forest or along cornfields. Another bad example would be, to do a photo walk with ‘green’ in a forest in spring or summer. So be sure to choose the right topic for the region you are planning to walk.

photo walk: clouds

photo walk: clouds | momentstolivefor.com

This time a little unusual photo walk. While shooting many different motives on our summer vacation one popped up again and again: clouds. Especially after I tried the polar filter for the first time and the clouds became so much more clearer and farther stretched out, I found every day another painting of clouds above me. A few times I even shot a video when the clouds were drifting very fast above the sky. They somehow brought my creativity back. Maybe this is something you can try too everyday for a set period of time or on your vacation too if you don’t have time for a full one or two hour photo walk. This way you can focus on a theme for a longer time and lern how your mood changes the kind of pictures you take.

photo walk: green

Photo-walk-green-27

Everytime I start to a new photo walk I consider several themes and choose one before I’m out of the door. Everytime I doubt finding enough motives, but then I see the first thing and next to it the second. Suddenly everywhere pops something up. Like yesterday, when I chose ‚green‘ as my theme for the walk. I really doubted, that I would find much more than plants, but I forgot how colorful Berlin is. There were green doors, green graffitis, green shop signs and some more. Within an hour I had over 40 different motives together. I think, when you choose to shoot one theme, the brain focuses mainly on finding fitting things automatically. It’s like looking for Waldo. The brain is trained to search for a red-white striped thingy and blends everything else out. It’s amazing, what you can find with this technic.

Somewhere along the way an old man asked: ‚Do you take a photo of everything?‘ ‚No‘ I said ‚today just everything that’s green.‘ Sounds a little bit crazy, right? The man looked a little irritated till I explained, that I do photo walks with a theme to train my photographic eye and the use of my camera. We talked on for a while. When I walked on I had to smile. Yes, it sounds crazy taking photos of things, that are green. But it’s the best training I can think of and I found the most fun and beautiful things looking for little details on the photo walks, that most people will overlook.

My very first photo walk was about ‘white‘. Colors are a very easy start to do a photo walk, because you train your eyes to look for everything and on unusual places. Therefore I started with several color themed photo walks back then:
white | blue | yellow | color contrast | soft colors | I need colors

You can see how my photography style evolved over the years in big parts thanks to those photo walks. Find more photo walks here.

photo walk: house numbers

Another blue sky Sunday with icy cold winds blowing around every street corner here in Berlin. Much too cold and uncomfortable to take a long walk, but okay for a short photo walk. I photographed house numbers today. A theme that’s been on my mind for a long while and today seemed like the perfect day. I hadn’t planned this photo walk and prepared a route with the most interesting house numbers, so we just walked around aimlessly. Therefore the numbers we found, weren’t that fabulous and different. So there will be definitely a second photo walk with this theme in the future and much better planned. But for now, I really like the few motives I found.

photo walk: pattern II

In 2015 I want to do one photo walk a month to get better in using my DSLR camera in manual mode and broaden my mind. Last Sunday I just started to walk without a concrete theme in mind. I passed several motives, but it wasn’t till I saw this beautiful green wall, when I knew my theme: pattern. I did this theme already in 2012, but it was one of my first and that shows. Therefore it was time to give it another chance.

The weather was beautiful although icy cold, but the blue sky and warm sunshine made the patterns look even more wonderful and sunny. I loved especially the colorful window inside the old Zionskirche at Prenzlauer Berg and the old, broken walls.

photo walk: fall

photo walk: fall | momentstolivefor.com

Such a wonderful, sunny and warm October Sunday. Perfect for a walk under colored trees, to take the last really warm sunbeams in and fill the reservoire for the long winter days. We took a walk through the Tiergarten in Berlin, where the leaves are still not all colored in fall colors, but it was beautiful anyway. The sun shone through the leaves so bright, that you almost needed sunglasses. We even saw people wandering around barefoot, like it was a warm summer day. What day would be more perfekt to take a fall photo walk.

worldwide photo walk

Worldwide photo walk 2014 | Alexanderplatz, Berlin | momentstolivefor.com

On Saturday the big Kelby’s worldwide photo walk happened. All around the world photographers would take walks together. When I found it on Flickr, I just had to praticipate since photo walks are one of my favorite things to do. Amazingly Lauren joined too in Seoul, South Korea and she sent me some photos from her photo walk, half around the world. It was exciting to see such a different world happen in the exact same moment.

When I woke up on Saturday it rained cats and dogs. No weather for a photo walk at all. I already saw the worldwide photo walk in Berlin not happen in the afternoon, but when I started walking to the meeting point at the Alexanderplatz, the rain had stopped, thankfully. But the grey clouds stayed, so the decision to change my camera mode to monochrome was easy, there wouldn’t have been much colors anyway. However it was a good training for my photographic eye and I found some new wonderful places, I will come back to, when the weather is sunny and bright again.
