photo walk: pattern II

photo walk: pattern | momentstolivefor.com

In 2015 I want to do one photo walk a month to get better in using my DSLR camera in manual mode and broaden my mind. Last Sunday I just started to walk without a concrete theme in mind. I passed several motives, but it wasn’t till I saw this beautiful green wall, when I knew my theme: pattern. I did this theme already in 2012, but it was one of my first and that shows. Therefore it was time to give it another chance.

The weather was beautiful although icy cold, but the blue sky and warm sunshine made the patterns look even more wonderful and sunny. I loved especially the colorful window inside the old Zionskirche at Prenzlauer Berg and the old, broken walls.

photo walk: fall

photo walk: fall | momentstolivefor.com

Such a wonderful, sunny and warm October Sunday. Perfect for a walk under colored trees, to take the last really warm sunbeams in and fill the reservoire for the long winter days. We took a walk through the Tiergarten in Berlin, where the leaves are still not all colored in fall colors, but it was beautiful anyway. The sun shone through the leaves so bright, that you almost needed sunglasses. We even saw people wandering around barefoot, like it was a warm summer day. What day would be more perfekt to take a fall photo walk.

travel art journal

travel art journal by momentstolivefor.com

When we finally started into our vacation this summer, I wanted to be able to do a bit of art journaling. The problem was, I didn’t want to take a whole lot of crafty stash with me. Mainly because we were traveling on bike and I had no space in my bike bags for anything else than the necessary. The only option was a notebook, because it was small enough.

Therefore I started to collect title snippets from magazines, that spoke to me and put them into the lovely notebook ‘More ideas than time’ by SODAlicious. Here you can see the mess, I made on our bed. I used the washi tape to support the colors of the text scraps and get something like a design on the pages. All I took with me on our vacation, was this travel art journal, some pens (black sharpie, thin black pen and neon sharpies) and two roles of washi tape, just in case. I never missed anything. All I needed was my travel art journal and a pen to keep me going. I even journaled on the beach.

worldwide photo walk

Worldwide photo walk 2014 | Alexanderplatz, Berlin | momentstolivefor.com

On Saturday the big Kelby’s worldwide photo walk happened. All around the world photographers would take walks together. When I found it on Flickr, I just had to praticipate since photo walks are one of my favorite things to do. Amazingly Lauren joined too in Seoul, South Korea and she sent me some photos from her photo walk, half around the world. It was exciting to see such a different world happen in the exact same moment.

When I woke up on Saturday it rained cats and dogs. No weather for a photo walk at all. I already saw the worldwide photo walk in Berlin not happen in the afternoon, but when I started walking to the meeting point at the Alexanderplatz, the rain had stopped, thankfully. But the grey clouds stayed, so the decision to change my camera mode to monochrome was easy, there wouldn’t have been much colors anyway. However it was a good training for my photographic eye and I found some new wonderful places, I will come back to, when the weather is sunny and bright again.

wanderlust: Volkspark Rehberge, Berlin

Volkspark Rehberge, Berlin | momentstolivefor.com

What a lovely little park in the North of Berlin. We wanted to spend a little time in nature and escape the noisy, stressful city for a while. Since we sold our car a week ago, we had to choose something reachable by bike. The Volkspark Rehberge within Wedding is just six kilometers from our home, so perfect for a little trip.

To take it all in we pushed our bicycles alongside through the park under the warm fall sunlight. The special thing about the Volkspark Rehberge is, that it isn’t really looked after. Main parts of it are wild growing, but that’s exactly the beautiful charm of this park. It’s not like all the other cultivated ones in Berlin. Additionally you can take a boat trip on the Plötzensee or make a picknick on one of the wild growing meadows. But only if you aren’t afraid of spiders. After the fourth crawled upon our blanket, we packed our things and moved on to discover the rest of the park.

colorful runners in Berlin

Berlin Marathon 2014 | momentstolivefor.com

This Sunday the famous Berlin Marathon happened and the route followed a nearby street. So when we heard the Samba group with their rhythmic drums, we went to cheer the runners on. It is always so amazing to see someone turn his or her dream into reality. And here there were hundred, thousands of them, running the marathon. It always moves me to tears and so I almost cried, seeing them run, moved by their bravery.

They run 42 long kilometers in unknown terrace. Since so many weren’t even from Germany but from all around the world. Denmark, Mexico, Italy, South Africa, to name just a few. Just as multidimensional the nationalities were the colors. It looked like a running rainbow, embellished by really funny costumes and big ballons, showing the pace makers time.

And if I weren’t already tearing up enough three moments made me swallow hard. The first was just sweet. A dad, passing by his family, stopping to kiss his wife and cuddle his two sweet girls, dressed with tutus. So cute. The second was a pair of runners with blue shirts, bonded together with a small rope. On the back was written: blind guide. The third was a wheelchair user. First nothing so unusual, since the wheelchair run started just half an hour earlier. But the man only used one of his arms to keep the wheelchair moving. I’m still so touched by their bravery, their will power to live their dream, fighting their life circumstances. So brave.

under water magic

under water magic | jelly fish | momentstolivefor.com

I love jellyfish. What is more magical than jellyfish dancing in the water, so soft and light. But sometimes deadly. One of the most deadliest animals on the planet. I still can’t get my head around this fact, that something that beautiful can do so much damage. Out of the water and on the beach it’s mostly looking just like jelly, no magic, no dancing. But under water jellyfish look like fairies of the sea, with their long tentacles dancing. Or the species without tentacles like light pervaded ghosts. Magic.

The photos were taken at the Ozeaneum and Meeresmuseum in Stralsund and at the Zoo Aquarium in Berlin. I’m so happy, I’ve got these shots. They are so filled with beauty and are definitely not everyday photos. I just had to share them with you.

wanderlust: Prinzessinengarten in Berlin

wanderlust: Prinzessinengarten in Berlin-Kreuzberg | momentstolivefor.com

Actually we were looking for a new fleamarket in Berlin, when we stumbled about this place of wonder: the Prinzessinengarten in Kreuzberg. It’s a community garden in the centre of Berlin and its focus is set on organic and alternative gardening methods. They use f.e. old milk packages for growing herbs or water pipes for strawberries. They sell organic food and show off little projects from students of architecture. The garden is a little green oasis and worth a visit. If you want to, you can even join in and do a little bit of gardening twice a week too.

round & round: haven of Rostock

round & round: haven of Rostock | momentstolivefor.com

Round & round is a little photo project I’m doing once in a while. When I find an interesting place, I choose a fixed point to stand and try to find as many interesting motives around me as possible. The only moves I make are up and down and a turn of 360°. I don’t take one step in any direction. That’s the challenge. But everytime I find little details, that I would have otherwise missed. It pushes me to look closely at all that is around me. It doesn’t take long. Five to ten minutes are enough for this little exercise, but you lern so much. This one here is a round & round shoot I took at the haven of Rostock near to the historic center, where I took the photo walk architecture.

7 ways how traveling fuels your soul

7 ways how traveling fuels your soul | momentstolivefor.com

1. Enjoy the view

Think nothing but feel. We think so much in our everyday life. We plan, we work, we think forward and backwards, about the past and the future. Sometimes our brain gets a headache from thinking less on weekends. I get these regularly, when my brain calms down on Sundays. Therefore the best thing I did on this vacation was to sit down on the beach, watch the clouds and sea, feel the wind on my face and the sand beneath my toes and just think… nothing. I did this for hours and it was so freeing. Just being really in the moment with a blank mind.

2. Be amazed

Visit new places and be inspired by architecture and the life around you (nature, people, animals). Every new city I visit is an adventure, an inspiration to me. Architecture amazes me – historical or modern doesn’t matter. I love the old playful, squiggly details on historical buildings as much as the symmetric patterns on glass and metallic buildings from the last 20 years. These capture my eyes everytime and I stand before them in awe and wonder, forgetting everything else in my life and around me. Maybe it’s not architecture for you, but something else that you can forget everything else about, like a beautiful view from a hill or mountain. Be amazed.

3. Allow nature to nuture you

Watch sunrise or sunset and feel this awe-moment in your heart. Don’t forget to get out of the city. The most amazing views and moments await you in nature. It’s so much more alive than a city filled with busy people. The air is cleaner, you can take adventures along unknown routes, hide somewhere in the woods, or put your hot feed into icy cold river water. You will become one with nature again and feel life at its best, with your whole body and mind.

4. Let your mind play

Be creative – without pressure. Just for the sake of creating – not for your blog or anyone else, it’s just for you. Write in your journal – let your thoughts run wild. Sketch the scenery or anything that comes to your mind. Take photos for fun – not for your blog, not for a future photobook. Just for fun. Try new things. Let your creative mind run wild, without pressure of showing your creations to anyone. Just be creative for the sake of creating and let your mind play like a child.

5. Enjoy being

Don’t pay too much on a fancy hotel room. It’s just to keep your things and for sleeping. The main reason you travel is for experiencing new things and landscapes, not another bed. The best moment we had on our vacation, was at sunset at the beach with a cheap bottle of wine and some cheese bites. Nothing more. Just us and nature.

6. Get lost

Don’t follow the usual, known tourist routes. I found the most precious places while getting lost in cities like Athens or Paris. I always wander around in cities without much of a plan. Just to take it all in – the people, the real life and city – and somehow around the next bend something wonderful pops up – like a little church or shop, I would’ve otherwise missed.

7. Take breaks

Yes, sometimes you even need a break from traveling. As much as it is amazing to see so many new things, you definitely need time to process all these new impressions and experiences. Don’t jump from one city or sightseeing spot to the next. Just sit down once in a while, drink a coffee and enjoy the view. Otherwise you will need another vacation after your vacation to process everything and feel maybe even more wrung out than before. Enjoy.
